FINALIST:Hannah Norman for Room With a View, Aberdour
Young Tourism Entrepreneur
Being brought up in the tourism and hospitality industry, and working in bars and restaurants in Edinburgh and Fife, Hannah Norman was inspired to open Room With A View Seafood Restaurant in the Fife coastal village of Aberdour in June 2006.
With a constantly changing menu which reflects the weekly fish market, the restaurant has gained an impressive reputation for delicious locally-caught seafood which can be enjoyed whilst taking in spectacular views of Edinburgh and the River Forth.
The business has become an important part of the local community with Hannah recently winning the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust award in economic and community impact. The restaurant provides employment opportunities for local residents and supports a broad range of local suppliers and producers, as well as attracting visitors to the area.
Hannah has overcome a number of challenges including changes in legislation and difficult access to the restaurant and, despite the economic downturn, has established a successful business which demonstrates strong financial performance over the past 3 years.
NEWS - Press Release 29/05/09
Room with a View has beaten off stiff competition from other travel and tourism businesses across Scotland to win a top tourism award at a ceremony in Edinburgh on 29th May 2009.
Hannah Norman & Tim Robson (proprietor & Chef) of Room with a View Restaurant in Aberdour, won the Moffat Award for best Scottish tourism business with outstanding economic and community impact, and a £1500 cash prize. Frontline Falconry in Moffat, Dumfries, won the award for excellent customer service, and the founder of Heb Hostel in Stornoway won the award for personal growth and development.
The Moffat Awards were launched in July 2007 by the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) thanks to generous support from The Moffat Charitable Trust. The Awards recognise outstanding young business entrepreneurs who are demonstrating best practice, excellent customer service and positive economic and community impact in the Scottish travel and tourism industry.
Hannah Norman has been inspired from an early age to open her own restaurant, having been brought up in the hotel and tourism industry. With funding and additional support from PSYBT, she was finally able to realise her ambitions in 2006 with the opening of Room with a View with her partner Tim, situated within the Forth View Hotel in the coastal village of Aberdour in Fife.
Room with a View employs 7 part-time staff and has experienced a dramatic increase in visitors during the last three years, thanks to its reputation for excellent cuisine and quality service. An expansion programme is currently underway which will double the capacity of the restaurant and solar paneling is also being installed to provide hot water and additional sources of power.
The Scottish tourism industry is estimated to be valued in excess of £4billion and employs in the region of 200,000 people. Last year PSYBT supported over 90 tourism businesses offering goods and services that enhance the community and overall visitor experience of Scotland.
Congratulating the winners, PSYBT chief executive, Mark Strudwick, said “These awards are a tremendous showcase for Scotland’s emerging young talent in the Scottish tourism industry and we are delighted that together, with the Moffat Trust, we are able to give them the support and recognition they deserve.”
Speaking on behalf of The Moffat Charitable Trust, Mr Jamie Moffat said, “Success comes to those who harness their drive and ambitions and grasp every opportunity presented to them and these young entrepreneurs have done exactly that. They are a credit to the tourism industry in Scotland.”
